Min supersetup fungerade över förväntan. Jag har dragit igenom händerna genom växterna en gång om dagen så UVC-filtret+Quickfilter kunde snappa upp resterna och imorse såg det ut såhär:

I got tired of never be able to connect to X-box live. When I did the "Check connection"-thingy I always went up failing the MTU and ICMP-test.

So I set out to find out once and for all how to set that annoying value. I learnt a few tricks.

The MTU-value can be set inside the router, so if you connect your X-box directly to an ADSL-modem or connect directly via cable you can stop reading. I use a D-Link wireless router (Di-624). Logon to it from http://192.168.0.1 and go to the correct page where you can set the MTU-value.

First of all. Set it to something "high", like 1500. Now you will be able to hunt down the best value.

You can do this manually by using this command line:
ping -f -l 1470 www.defblog.se
Which if you set a too high value will respond with something like "Packet needs to be fragmented". Start to lower it by 10 until the ping reaches it's host.

Another way of finding this value is using mturoute.exe, a free utility downloadable here: http://www.elifulkerson.com/projects/mturoute.php

Here is an example of running it:

1472 is the "optimum" value.

But wait, that got my DNS-test to fail instead? What's up?

Your dns have probably a lower maximum MTU-value than the server you were trying first. So use the mturoute.exe against your primary dns instead. It will look something like this:

Path MTU: 1440 bytes.

And there you have it. Put 1412 as the MTU-value in your router and voila. Connection with live will with much higher certainty not fail. Connection test might fail sometimes, but you can usually connect to Live anyway and most important - it will hold you connection and not sign you out after 10 secs.

Ny färg i rummet med akvariet. Ingen mer blå bakgrund med andra ord.
